New York City Park Pleasures

Spring is here in New York City, and the abundance of parks throughout the five boroughs beckons the outdoor-lover in all of us. Call it an “active awakening” if you will. Exploring local parks – with their wide open spaces for walking, running, biking, dog-walking and relaxing – is an ideal way to spend the day with friends and family.

Spanning more than 840 acres in the heart of Manhattan is idyllic Central Park (spanning 59th Street to 110th Street between Fifth Avenue and Central Park West). What distinguishes this verdant gem? The Central Park Zoo. The Meadow. Great Lawn. Strawberry Fields. Belvedere Castle. The Mall. The Pond. Shakespeare Garden. The Carousel. Need we say more?

In our home borough of Queens is fantastic Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Watch thrilling U.S. Open summertime tennis matches at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Stroll along Flushing Bay Promenade. See the iconic Unisphere globe (built for the 1964 World’s Fair). Discover the Queens Zoo. Enrich your cultural side with visits to the Queens Museum of Art and Queens Theater in the Park.

An amazing urban playground, Brooklyn Bridge Park sprawls over 1.3 miles of Brooklyn’s waterfront along the borough’s East River shoreline. The spectacular city views, beautiful gardens and riverfront promenades are complemented by endless cultural, educational and recreational activities in the park. You can go boating, take history tours, watch movies in the park, enjoy concerts, have tons of fun at the piers, and much more.

The longest waterfront park in the U.S., Hudson River Park encompasses four miles along Manhattan’s west side. The transformation from decaying piers to what Hudson River Park is now is remarkable. People of all ages can stay as active (or relaxed) as they’d like thanks to athletic fields and courts, mini-golf, carousel rides, kayaking, skate parks, play areas, dog runs, bike riding, sunbathing, and leisurely walks – just a snapshot of the spring and summertime activity.

Before we all know it, Memorial Day (Monday, May 25) will be upon us, which means, for many, spending time at the beach – and another great reason to stay with us for the weekend. We have gorgeous swaths of sand in our area…but we’ll share more information next time!
