Spring Awakening in New York City

Beyond the frigid temperatures that we expect from winter in New York City, we look forward to a “spring awakening” coming next month. From among the snow and ice, we welcome the warmth of spring activities to defrost our spirits inside and out!

For two weeks (between March 22 and April 4), the annual Macy’s Flower Show transforms Macy’s Herald Square into a colorful wonderland of spectacular flowers, plants and trees from around the world. Activities include participating in floral demonstrations, admiring amazing bouquets of the day, and more. With Macy’s Herald Square being the world’s largest department store, you might want to check out some new spring clothes for yourself after appreciating the floral extravaganza.

For more flower power, the Orchid Show (February 28 through April 19) at the Bronx Botanical Gardens doesn’t disappoint. Themed “Chandeliers,” the show displays the orchids’ grace and elegance from above – hanging baskets, dozens of suspended designs, and a large star-shaped chandelier created with hundreds of plants. Afterwards, you can walk the gorgeously manicured grounds – a great activity for friends, couples and families to enjoy together.

Yes, it’s spring, and yes, it’s Rockettes time! Coming to the Radio City stage for a limited seven-week engagement (March 26 through May 3) is the New York Spring Spectacular, a high-energy and inspiring tale with amazing music, dancing and special effects.

Green is associated with spring – think tree leaves and fresh-cut (not snow-covered) grass – and in mid-March, green becomes synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day. The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade (along Fifth Avenue from 44th to 79 street) is a celebration of green spirit and pride with this year’s Grand Marshall, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York.

Spring training for baseball also starts next month – yes, in Florida, but weather-weary New Yorkers can embrace the idea that warm temperatures and tons of outdoor fun at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field will be enjoyed sooner than later!

And, with a spring awakening comes more sunlight! Daylight Savings Time takes place Sunday, March 8 at 2 am.

There is so much to look forward to as spring approaches in New York City! We always welcome the opportunity to be your host any season of the year.
